A conversion of a two storey warehouse in North London into a
studio and house. New elements of construction were added to the
existing shell, making a new whole where the space is given character
by the variety of new and old material surfaces. A new facade
of translucent insulating glass is clamped onto the face of the
brick warehouse. The glass is like a silk screen which holds a
rich set of shadows cast by surfaces and openings within. This
composition changes through the day and night. At the rear of
the building a piece of floor has been removed and a room-sized
rooflight added. Within this cut is placed a complex figure which
accommodates the stair and service spaces. |
