This competition entry for the Bundesgartenschau 2001 proposes
to reinforce and extend the traditionally open urban matrix of
Karlsruhe. The urban project initiated by Weinbrenner in the nineteenth
century envisaged an urbanism that was both ideologically and
spatially open, linking the city fabric to the landscape beyond.
While responding to the existing urban block structure and the
superimposition of a new motorway extension, this project proposes
an urbanism that is progressively less dense towards its outer
edges. An urbanism that is about the meeting of town and country. |
