| Nara Convention Hall | ||||||
| The project is located within an area of extensive redevelopment at the centre of Nara, adjacent to the central railway station. The site bridges between major new commercial buildings and one or two storey houses and sheds that make up the traditional urban structure of the city. The Convention Hall comprises three auditoria of 1500, 500 and 100 seats with extensive public facilities. | ||||||
| The design proposes that public buildings can be more than simply facilities for public use. In contrast to a monumental tradition, these buildings can form an important instrument in the extension of the public realm. The project proposes a building without walls. A building that contains a mixture of the big and the small, the determined and the undetermined, the organised and the chaotic. A building that can enable a wide variety of planned and spontaneous events to happen. | ||||||
